I am a General Surgeon with a passion for Health and Wellness. The number one New Years Resolution has to do with Health, Exercise, and Diet. We all feel that it is the best time to start for the first time or again. The percentage of people that make it through the whole year is disappointingly small and here is why I believe it happens. As I watch what is going on in the media I am beginning to believe that we are becoming a "credit card" society. What I mean by that is we get what we want now and are willing to pay for it later, immediate gratification. That does not work with our health. The media also suggests to us that we can lose large amounts of weight or get a "six-pack" abdomen in a six-eight week time frame. That is impossible in all but extreme situations. We take these kinds of external influences into consideration when it comes to our health and look for those "immediate" results. Becoming "Healthy" is not an overnight miracle; It is a process just like learning how to walk is a process. You could not cheat that process or find any shortcuts. You cannot take a seed and grow it to harvest in three days. You cannot change or cheat the "Process" of nature.

As you read this article you are either becoming healthy or unhealthy. You cannot stand still. It is just like if you were standing on a staircase; you either go up or down, but cannot stand on the same step forever. The question becomes "Do you want to get Healthy?" You, first of all, need to know your reasons for getting healthy. Some of us just need to look at our medical history and there are a plethora of reasons there. We, as a nation, are beginning to lead the world in obesity and diabetes. Becoming healthy can reverse many of these trends. Once you know your reasons, you need to make some commitments to your cause. We, as human beings, are good at making commitments, but, for the majority, do very poorly in carrying them out. Just look at "New Years Resolutions." We also tend to react to crisis faster than the subtle hints that we get everyday. We decide to improve our health after the heart attack instead of doing things to help prevent it.

There are two phrases to keep in mind as you consider the content of this Letter. "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing everyday expecting different results." We all are guilty of that in all aspects of our lives, not just our health. We feel that we can change our results with our old habits and actions but if you continue to do what you have always done, you will continue to get what you have always gotten. The other phrase is: "If you want to make some changes in your life, you have to make some changes in your life." Change is often uncomfortable because we are so secure in our comfort zones, but change is good. It is part of the "process". We will not make these changes that we need to make to improve our health and lives if the reasons for doing so are not important enough.

So with all of this as background, how does one get started? Stated very simply, take the first step: make the decision to start the journey. Every journey begins with the first step. Make some commitments; develop new habits. You do that every day of your life for your job or profession because you want the result at the end of the week, a paycheck. What about another result? Your good health.

One caution: Don't do it alone. Find yourself a mentor, someone who has done what you want to do and is very successful at it. In the area of health it may be your doctor, a personal trainer, a nutritionist, etc. Find someone with the fruit on the tree and follow their direction and advice. You will pay a golf pro to improve your game. Find a pro in your health. Finally, set some goals and go after them. Let your mentor guide you in the process initially.

Remember this: Becoming healthy is a process, which must be an ongoing journey. Learn to enjoy the journey for, believe it or not, the success of achieving these goals is not in attaining them, it is the "process" of becoming who or what you need to become while you are doing it.

Three Simple Tips For A Healthy And Happier Family

What is family? Check any dictionary and you'll define family as a group of persons sharing common ancestry. But a family is so much more than a simple biological relation to another person. A family can also be two or more people who share goals and values and have long-term commitments to one another.

At its core, a family is a social group that must be nurtured and maintained in order to grow and thrive. As with all social groups, communication and interaction in the form of a communal gathering are integral to survival.

The concept of the family gathering has been in existence for millennia. It's not a modern creation but rooted in the traditions and histories of our own particular cultures and ancestry. A family gathering, whether it's a daily shared meal, a special gathering over the holidays or Sunday visits with grandparents, has an impact on the development of our family units and us as individuals within the unit.

Family gatherings are the cornerstone of successful and happy families and we all need to work to include communal activities as part of our daily family routine. The gathering does not have to be a formal affair that includes every cousin, Aunt or Uncle you have. A simple meal together with your immediate family unit can provide a vehicle for communication that otherwise may not get to be expressed.

Let's gather at Oliver's home:

Oliver, at ten, is the oldest of three children. He has a 4-year old sister and a 5-year old brother. Oliver is a warm and friendly child with a gentle nature. Never one to antagonize his peers, Oliver has become increasingly aggressive and confrontational with his peers. Over a six month period, Oliver's behavior has deteriorated to the point where he became isolated from his peers - his play dates have virtually disappeared and he spends most of his weekends sitting in front of his Nintendo playing by himself, rather than engaging in activities with his siblings. Both Mom and Dad noticed a change in his behavior yet attempts to discuss the matter with Oliver were met with "I don't know" replies.

When Oliver's deteriorating behavior began to translate to his school work, Mom and Dad's anxiety over the welfare of their child reached critical levels and they sought help.

Through individual and group sessions, it was discovered that a vital piece of the family dynamic was missing from the portrait. With a young and growing family, Dad works until 7-8 pm each evening. Mom usually has dinner on the table @ 6pm but does not dine with them, preferring to wait until her husband returns. Due to Dad's hours, Dad rarely has dinner with his family. In fact, they almost never had a meal as a family.

Oliver is at a critical stage in his development when he will slowly explore his independence from his family. It is important that the comfort of home and the closeness of the family continue to engage Oliver and provide him with guidance and direction as he moves into his teenage years.

Oliver's deteriorating behavior is a warning signal that he is reacting to a family unit that he was not particularly connected to and that he was losing interest and direction.

To re-engage Oliver in the family, Mom and Dad began a regular family meal each evening, allowing that time to be a place where all could vent and discuss the events of their day and any other issues etc that they felt they needed to share. Not only did the regular meals allow Oliver the opportunity to share his life, it also allowed him to make his parents aware of homework challenges and together they worked to clarify difficult concepts and engaged in extra practice homework.

Having a supportive and loving forum that all members of the family had a lasting impact - deepening their relationships and increasing their self-confidence.

Here are three simple tips you can use today to increase Family Happiness:

1. Assess - Take a look at your family know each ones strengths/weakness

2. Connect - Be aware of how connected your family is to each other

3. Construct - A forum for your family to share feelings and issues on a regular basis

During the course of the summer, I began taking my boys to public swim every Friday. It was a chance for both of them to see their friends from school without me acting as sole chaperone amidst chaotic uprising within my house. Months had passed since we began this ritual when one of the moms and I both noticed that my seven year old was becoming quite muscular. Poking a bit of fun at my career in fitness, the mom asked if I had him on protein drinks and tofu. We both laughed and I admitted that at times he may sip my morning shake and that his favorite hot dish from Whole Foods is the Tofu Stroganoff, but that in general he was sneaking cookies and requesting ice cream just like any other child. However, even after public swim ended, the initial observation became a guessing game. What was the key to my older boy's tonality and what specific activity resulted in the definition of muscle tissue?

Over the next couple weeks, the answer became clear. Last winter, my husband, being the horse-loving sole that he is, suggested we buy my son a pony. Not only did he believe this would bring father and son together more often, it would also give his horse a buddy to play with in the meadow. I agreed, and soon we found a cute little ? draft and ? Shetland mix. The two equine were situated side by side in the barn. Then, the discussion turned to chores. If you think it is hard to get your child to care for a goldfish or hamster, try tending to a pony. There is the mane and tail to be brushed, stalls to be cleaned, poop to be shoveled, hooves to be picked, hay to be carried and the water dishes must be checked daily to insure good health. Add to that task list, the tolerance of being nipped occasionally, since ponies can be testy little buggers and there will be games of chase around the property, if any barrier gate is not properly latched. As extensive as this list seems, my husband and son have gotten their chores down to 20 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes at night, with additional tender love and care on weekends. But, this is usual workflow. I believe the muscle tone came when my husband's ATV went on downtime for a few weeks (and still sits as I type this). My obliged horsemen were forced to walk down our long steep hill to the horses from our house, care for them, fill plastic bags with the fresh manure and then drag the heavy bags back up our steep hill toward the neighbor's garden pile.

In general, horseback riding and care of the horse equate to much more than sitting one's mighty bohonkus on the back of a horse. The sport is actually a great way to teach a child responsibility, get them out of the house and breed a loving relationship between human and beast. In the parent's handbook and resource guide, Growing Up With Horses, the magazine offers facts that fitness associated with horses is not to be overlooked. In a term coined "Equi-cise", it was reported that cleaning a stall and loading/unloading feed for 20-30 minutes will burn around 180 calories for each chore. Also, sweeping the barn aisle for 20 minutes will burn around 110 calories and riding the horse at a canter for only 10 minutes can burn up to another 110 calories. When I read these facts, it feels great to put on my Lifestyle & Weight Management Consultant hat, and show people that you do not always have to hit the gym to enjoy a bit of physical fitness. For that matter, vigorously brushing down your horse (tail, mane and wire brushing the body) can burn as many calories as a game of doubles tennis. For a child, this is especially beneficial because it is a fun outdoor event that does not have "mom is making me exercise" written all over it.

When we purchased the pony, the objective was simply to bring my overworked husband together with his Sponge-Bob watching son. The rewards have far surpassed this notion. My son loves his pony, he has gained confidence by learning to ride and knowing the ropes of caring for an animal that depends on him, he has developed a deeper relationship with his father through hard work and a similar interest and he maintains good physical fitness through it all. The drugstore cowboy has come to be a full-fledged horseman.

While horseback riding is a great option for being active, not everyone has access to large areas in order to accommodate a horse's roam-free demands. However, if it is something of interest, a lot of areas offer horseback riding camps. There are also stable jobs available and people who would love to pay a young person to brush their horse or pony and clean the stalls. It isn't always a glamorous sport, but it sure can weed out a bit of the shallowness that life sometimes has to offer and in some children it will strike a chord deep in their sole that will passionately be carried well into their golden ages.
