Why Do Health Insurance Rates Go Up?

If you pay attention to your own personal health insurance rates, you are likely to notice that over a period of time they are quite likely to go up. Most people are aware of the fact that health insurance premiums tend to increase over time, and these jumps in cost can present quite a financial strain for somebody who is on a tight budget. In order to be able to best anticipate when your rates will go up in the future, it is a good idea to spend some time learning about how health insurance rates are calculated and why they sometimes head skyward.

Although many people notice their health insurance rates going up, few people ever remark on their health insurance rates going down. Premiums very rarely fall, and the reason for this fact is the same reason for most increases in health insurance rates. Like any other field of the modern business world, the health care industry is profoundly affected by inflation. As the cost of living rises, the cost of medical care rises with it. This means that insurance companies are forced to raise their rates to avoid losing money. Inflation is widely considered by economists to be the primary reason why health insurance rates increase.

The other reason why you are most likely to find yourself paying more for health insurance coverage is that you are costing your insurance company money. The more insurance claims you make, the more money the company needs to spend on you. This makes you, to some extent, a financial liability, so if you make claims often your company will raise your rates. Because of this fact, the same people who need health insurance the most are the ones who often end up straining to make their monthly payments after a sudden increase in their insurance rates.

To protect themselves, insurance companies usually offer higher rates to different people depending on how often those customers are likely to make claims. This is why people with chronic conditions like asthma, vision problems, or diabetes are likely to have higher rates than people without similar afflictions. It is also the reason why people who smoke and are therefore likely to have smoking-related health problems have higher insurance premiums than most non-smokers, who are statistically less likely to make health insurance claims. If you have recently visited a hospital or have had a doctor write you a new prescription, prepare to see your health insurance rates increase accordingly.

Natural Health And Beauty - The Truth About Vitamin E

Whilst skin care products generally won't deliver nutrients deep into the actual living cells beneath the superficial layers of the skin, the vitamin E in many products is actually useful. Scientists have found that by applying antioxidants to the skin, free radical damage that would normally occur through exposure to UV light (say, from the sun), can be prevented or at least minimized. Vitamin E is a popular ingredient in many skin care creams.

The scientists found that the protective effects of vitamin E from that period of UV exposure were apparent 2 and 3 days later. The group of people who had vitamin E cream applied to their skin had less signs of inflammation than the group who were given the lotion without vitamin E. Inflammation is a sign of cell damage, and was measured in this study by the amount of blood flow to that area as compared to normal. This was a placebo controlled, double blind study, which means that some people received the lotion with vitamin E, some didn't and neither group knew which it was getting. The conclusions these scientists made were that vitamin E was effective at preventing the visible signs of aging on skin.

Whilst vitamin E in creams and lotions will benefit the skin, there is strong doubt on whether it can help in some of the beauty products it is in. For example, when vitamin E is advertised as being of benefit to strengthen or thicken eyelashes, this is something of a misnomer, and is not supported by science. Paula Begoun, the 'cosmetic cop' writes that there isn't a product out there that will strengthen and thicken eyelashes. The best you can do in this instance is to apply an eyelash primer and mascara to make eyelashes appear thicker. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and the research verifies only benefits that relate to this antioxidant activity.

Another of the promises associated with vitamin E creams is that it helps to heal scars. This is not something that has been verified scientifically. Research quoted in Wikipedia found that when vitamin E was applied to patients who had undergone surgery, it did not reduce the size, shape, or color of scars. In fact, up to one third of patients experienced complications like allergies, dermatitis, and irritation that in fact can make a forming scar worse. Activated manuka honey is a much better option in reducing scarring, and healing skin.

Vitamin E remains an excellent antioxidant. It is helpful when taken as a supplement for a whole host of issues, including protecting the liver, and minimizing the damage smoking does. And it is great for the skin in terms of preventing sun damage from the oxidizing effect of UV light. It is a good 'beauty vitamin' when taken as a supplement. Erica Angyal describes how it protects cell membranes from damage and helps maintain their flexibility, which can diminish as we age. It also works to increase the level of vitamin A in our body. And it is very beneficial for skin problems like acne and psoriasis. She recommends taking 400 to 800 IU of vitamin E a day, to prevent premature aging and improve the lustre of skin.

Is Anti-Aging Just About Skin Care? How To Defy Age Through Health And Fitness

We the baby boomers, that is those aged about 40 and above make up about one quarter of the world?s population and are growing older rapidly. Considering that most of these baby boomers have already established their careers, have accumulated savings with disposable income, having grown up or fast growing up children and would probably owned their own homes, what do they want next? A secret antidote to stop the aging process would be nice isn?t it?

Business owners are quick to capitalize on this rich and growing market dreaming up multitudes of anti aging products and services to cater to the baby boomers. The fear of growing old and the loss of youth and vitality are so real that these industries are doing businesses in the tune of billions of dollars every year. Products like slimming pills, health care, skincare and look good products are so highly in demand that you see these companies pitching their products in multi million advertising campaigns. Some of these products do work very well but most don?t.

Of all the products and services catering to the baby boomers, skin care anti aging products seems to be spearheading the charge and raking in immense profit. Consumers persuaded by advertisements of skin care companies promising face lift without surgery, wrinkles vanishing creams and a host of other variations are snapping up these products real quick. Men are also not spared from the marketing onslaught and lines of men?s skincare products are now plentiful too.

Do you know what can be the best anti aging weapon against the effects of aging? Nope, it is not the skincare products that you can buy off the shelves. It is looking after your own health and fitness.

Do you remember the good old days when you are able to play robust games, climb trees, cycle long distances and enjoying them? Are you able to do these things with gusto these days? If not, why not? That is because your health and fitness is slowly and surely deteriorating as you age. We are putting on body fat faster because our metabolism is slowing down. From the age of about 25, our body starts to produce less and less growth hormones leading to deterioration of body tissues and the process to replace and repair tissue cells is being comprised more and more as we age. That is why we recover slower from diseases, muscles are getting smaller and weaker, bones are getting brittle and wrinkles start forming. In other words, we are slowly dying. So how do we defy age?

To defy these aging effects, we have got to keep ourselves fit and healthy. By improving our fitness and health levels, we are able to slow down and defy the aging process. We protect muscle and bone loss by lifting weights. With cardio exercises, we strengthen our hearts and lungs and improve our immunity keeping deadly age related diseases and obesity at bay. We will regain some the energy and vitality of our youthful days making daily chores so much easier to handle. Best of all, exercises reduces stress, improve your posture and adds a healthy glow to your skin. And you know what? It is free.

So isn?t improving your health and fitness is the best antidote to the aging process? I know because I refuse to let age defy me. So with good healthy eating habits a regular dose of exercise, I am able to play competitive soccer with people half my age, enjoy mountain tracking and scuba diving now and then. That to me is a much more fulfilling and enjoyable life than having jars of anti aging pills and skincare creams sitting on my shelf and burning a gaping hole in my pocket. Having good health and an excellent fitness level is your best weapon to defy age and keep the aging process at bay.

Why Fast Weight Loss is Unhealthy

Why Fast Weight Loss is Unhealthy

You've made the decision to lose weight as quickly as possible. You have your diet in place and you expect to follow it religiously. At this point, you may be wondering how much weight you can lose in a given week and whether fast weight loss can be dangerous for your body.
There are a number of things that can affect your weight loss. For instance, family history, or genetics, can play a significant role. Also, your weight loss may depend upon how much exercise you're engaging in, as well as how much stress you are under. Your metabolism, or how quickly you burn calories, can also have a major effect.
Theoretically, you could lose as much as 20 pounds a week. However, much of that weight could be water weight. That means that, once you go off your diet, you are likely to gain much of that weight back. Also, unless you engage in strength training, you will be losing muscle as well as fat, since about ? of the body's weight consists of muscle. It is interesting to note that, at most, you can probably lose four pounds of fat in a given week.
Nature has a way of protecting the body against excessive weight loss. If, for instance, your calorie count suddenly drops, your body will compensate for the fact by reducing your metabolic rate. As a result, you'll need fewer calories to maintain your weight. This explains why some people lose weight up to a point and then cannot lose any additional weight, no matter how hard they try.
If you lose weight quickly, there's a good chance that your health will be jeopardized. For instance, fast weight loss has been linked to the appearance of gall stones. Also, you may experience loose skin as your weight goes into free fall. Perhaps most distressing of all, if you experience rapid weight loss, there's a good chance that you will gain the weight back again. This is because it is very difficult to maintain a healthy diet regimen. You may find yourself falling back into your bad eating habits after a period of deprivation.
Fast weight loss also places you at greater risk for an eating disorder. You may be tempted to starve yourself, leading to anorexia. Or, because your food cravings are so great, you may want to binge and purge, leading to a case of bulimia. This is why it is so critically important to lose weight under a physician's care. Otherwise, you could be doing more harm to your body than good.
Although the body has the capability of shedding a great deal of weight over a period of time, most medical experts agree that one should not expect to lose more than one or two pounds a week in order to remain healthy. This can be disappointing to a dieter, especially one that needs to lose about 50 pounds. However, doctors believe that the go-slow approach is best for long-term weight loss. Otherwise, you could end up with a number of health problems you weren't anticipating.

There are a number of approaches you can use to lose weight. For instance, you might follow the Atkins plan, the Zone, or the diabetic diet. You might try Sugar Busters or the Carb Addict's prescription for losing weight. However, it is vitally important that you accompany your diet plan with an effective exercise routine. One of the best exercises you can do, in fact, is the easiest--walking. It has been said that you can lose as many as two pounds a week, just by walking alone.
As has been demonstrated here, rapid weight loss should be approached with caution. It is far better to lose a few pounds each week and maintain that weight loss over the long term. In essence, all good things take time, and that is particularly true when it comes to weight loss. Perhaps the best advice is to be patient. Follow a reasonable diet, get plenty of exercise, and drink a good amount of water. That way, you should be able to slowly lose weight--without jeopardizing your health in the process.

Health Insurance Companies - The Good and The Bad

When you are shopping for health insurance it would be helpful to know how often health insurance companies fail to provide the service you would expect. The Arizona Department of Insurance has released a report listing fines and complaints filed against health insurance companies in the state.

The report covers 27 insurers or about 75% of the companies serving Arizona. Does the report reflect health insurance performance in other states? I can't be sure, but it does give us a peek into the workings of the health insurance industry.

United Healthcare of Arizona is one of the major insurers in the state and it had the highest number of complaints per insurance policy. Time Insurance and Mega Life And Health Insurance are smaller companies and they had even high complaint ratios.

In Arizona Humana Health Plan satisfies the appeals of its insured more than any other company. On the other hand the report shows that Mega resolves fewer appeals to the satisfaction of the insured.

When it comes to the number of fines levied in the past 5-years by the AZ Department of Insurance the Arizona arm of CGNA Healthcare garbs the top spot. They were assessed the most fines.

If you would like to read more about the performance of health insurance companies you can find the full report online if you do a search for "Report on AZ Health Insurers". Chances are the insurance department or commission in your state issues a similar report.

Another fact we can learn from this Arizona report is that your state's insurance regulatory body may be able to help you in a dispute with your insurance company. You can find state insurance regulators on the internet by doing a search for National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The NAIC has a map of the United States on their web page. Just click on your state and you'll find your state's insurance department information.

Before you buy any policy it would be sensible to learn just which health insurance companies fail to please consumers in your state.
